Ancient Roman Coins

When people think of “old coins” chances are that what comes to mind is the change in that old jar in the attic or grandpa's silver dollars. But for something truly impressive to add to your collection nothing beats owning a handmade coin from thousands of years ago!

Our uncleaned coins come exactly as they were found in Europe still caked in hardened dirt so that you can have the fun of lovingly restoring these antiquities. For your reward YOU will be the first to see the coin as the last Roman who owned it.

You can't help but make an instant connection with our long ago ancestors. Who could have lost this coin? A Roman soldier, a luckless citizen, a slave? What could have been bought with it?

And for every question only your imagination for answers! Experience, too, coins from the even older time of the Greeks, the Middle Ages or obscure civilizations long left to the dustbin of history!

Our flagship product, the Dirty Old Coins Kit includes 10 genuine, uncleaned ancient Roman coins and a completely restored coin for eleven in total. To start you off right the kit also comes with a copy of Aorta; the most up–to–date reference book on Roman coins available and a cd-rom (PC and Mac compatible) with a color booklet explaining the restoration process and how to identify the coins along with a complete coin database featuring over 10,000 Roman and Byzantine coins. Everything included to turn you from newbie to expert in no time… with luck you may even uncover a valuable coin from a rare emperor or empress! This is without question one of the best educational products on the market today!

New for 2014 we have in stock certified antoniniani. This successor to the denarius got a bummer of a name but back in the day it was worth two of the old denarius and was roughly twice the size. These impressive silver coins feature radiate crowns for the emperors and a crescent bust for the empresses to give a rather romantic Sun vs. Moon contrast between them. They were issued from the year 217 through the rest of the 3rd century. Our Ants will date from about 220 through 260, the era when they were issued in good silver and with strong designs. As with the denarius, each comes with a detailed certificate signed and authenticated by Rasiel Suarez, a world renowned expert in the field of Roman numismatics.

Posters

Coin posters are an ideal teaching material for your classroom and look great in your home or office too! Each poster reproduces portraits and historical aspects from ancient coins that have been professionally photographed. While they are much more affordable than posters elsewhere be assured that these are very high–quality offset prints (not inkjet) using UV–coated inks at high resolution (~225dpi). They will easily last years in their as–new condition with minimal care. Being of industry standard dimensions their framing will also be considerably cheaper than custom–sized posters.
