Dirty Old Coins sponsored a pizza party/writing contest for a 4th grade class at Little Fort School in Waukegan, IL. The assignment was to write a short essay from the perspective of a Roman Emperor.
Here’s what some of the students had to say:
Julius Caesar
By Hugo
One day I got voted to be an emperor and my wife got voted to be the empress. The empress had a baby when I went to Spain on February 19, 44 BC. When I was in Spain there was a fight. When I was fighting I killed three people and then I got shot. I went back to Rome so I could heal my leg. I saw my little girl. We had a good life until I had three more little girls.
Augustus - The First Emperor
By Eric
When Caesar was murdered I became the Emperor of all his people. I put people who killed people in jail. I am a good emperor. I am not a bad emperor. If anything happens, come to me. I will deal with it. Thank you for your cooperation.
The Miserable Emperor
By Edwin
I am finally the first emperor of Rome, and my name is Octavian, but I’m miserable because my wife is dead. She was killed by someone throwing a knife at her. We still didn’t get the killer. I’m going to tell you the story of how she died. It was one sunny day and she was going to get food because we didn’t have food. When she was done, she went to buy clothes. My arch enemy paid someone to kill my wife. He knew that was my weakness. The guy that killed my wife got a powerful knife. The knife was pointy. It was late and I was worried because she was never that late. When she was coming through the door the guy threw the knife. I saw the man but I couldn’t get him. I will never forget that moment. Maybe someday someone will replace her.
Dirty Old Coins had the pleasure of working on a school project with Graham. He lives in Ohio. We donated coins and cleaning products for his school project in return for getting to use his results so you can see for yourself Graham’s findings for what method works most efficiently to clean your ancient coins.
The outcome?
Biox – “much cleaner with more detail”
Electrolysis – “coin became a lot darker and more visible”
35% Hydrogen Peroxide – “lots of detail came out made it easier to identify”
Mineral Oil – “coin became darker”
Vulpex – “made it more shinny”
